The word “presbyterian” comes from the Bible, where a “presbyter” is literally an older man in the church who helps by leading, governing, helping and guiding.

A Presbyter or Elder must not “lord it” over others, but rather be a kind and giving servant, even as he leads and helps (Matthew 20:25-28). In this way, he will imitate the Lord Jesus Christ, who did exactly that in all His earthly ministry.

But the Elder also has real authority, and the people will gladly submit to this, as he leads in a loving and gracious way (Hebrews 13:17).

The Bible also makes plain that God would have not just one man to rule in His church, but a number of men, who are all equals, and who rule together – this then makes up a Presbytery. And the Bible also sets in place checks and balances, so that there should always be accountability, in the various Courts of His church. In this way, Jesus Himself, by His Word teaching, and His Spirit guiding, actually rules in His church. The Christian church recognizes that there is only one Head and King of the Church – Jesus.

This, in total, is what Presbyterian means. Ask a question if you like!
